Production of Hollow Microspheres for Inertial Confinement Fusion Experiments

چکیده
The targets used in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are plastic capsules roughly 0.5 mm in diameter. The capsules, which typically have wall thicknesses from 20 to 60 p, must possess extraordinary symmetry and concentricity and must have surface finishes of less than 1000 A peak-to-valley variation over surface contours of from 10 to 100's of p. This paper reviews the fabrication of these capsules, focusing on the production of the thinwalled polystyrene microshell mandrel around which the capsule is built. The relationship between the capsule characteristics, especially surface finish, and capsule performance is discussed, as are the methods of surface characterization and modification necessary for experiments designed to study the effects of surface roughness on implosion dynamics. Targets for the next generation of ICF facilities using more powerful laser drivers will have to be larger while meeting the same or even more stringent symmetry and surface finish requirements. Some of the technologies for meeting these needs are discussed briefly.

Inverse Braking Radiation and Resonance Absorption in Corona Plasmas of Inertial Confinement Fusion
Abstract: In this paper, combining the Maxwell equations with the electron balanceequation, we obtain the inverse braking radiation absorption coefficient in a laser fusioncorona plasma. For a fixed plasma temperature, variations of the absorption coefficientversus the penetration depth into the plasma are illustrated numerically for differentvalues of laser wavelength. ...
متن کاملCHARACTERIZATION OF MICRO/NANO POROUS HOLLOW GLASS MICROSPHERES FABRICATED THROUGH VARIOUS CHEMICAL ETCHING PROCESSE FOR USE IN SMART COATINGS
Porous hollow glass microspheres have many uses, including encapsulation of active materials. In this paper a fast and facile method for fabricating porous hollow glass-microspheres was demonstrated by etching them using dilute hydrofluoric acid. Then, a highly reactive amine was infiltrated into the etched glass microspheres. Scanning electron microscopy was conducted for the hollow glass micr...

With the development of ultra-intense laser technology, MeV ions can be obtained from laser-foil interactions in the laboratory. These energetic ion beams can be applied in fast ignition for inertial confinement fusion, medical therapy, and proton imaging. However, these ions are mainly accelerated in the laser propagation direction. Ion acceleration in an azimuthal orientation was scarcely stu...

LLE Review, Volume 89 25 Introduction As part of the U.S. Inertial Confinement Fusion Program, LLE plans to implode deuterium–tritium (DT)–charged microspheres. These microspheres are filled with high-pressure deuterium and tritium gas under cryogenic conditions. The spheres are then stored and transferred as needed to the target chamber (located in an adjacent room) under vacuum and at tempera...
متن کاملMaximization of Inertial Confinement Fusion Yields through Laser Pulse Optimization
A method has been developed for the optimization of high-gain inertial confinement fusion targets. Using this method, software simulations have yielded pulse shapes that produce high fusion gain and demonstrate good target stability using a 1 megaJoule (MJ) laser source. These pulse shapes could help attain ignition on the National Ignition Facility inertial confinement fusion system. Introduct...
